The Australian Spinal Research Foundation (ASRF) is an Australian organisation that aims to fund research and disseminates knowledge that furthers the understanding, development and effectiveness of Chiropractic Care.

What is the ASRF?

The Australian Spinal Research Foundation (ASRF) was founded in 1976 and is owned by its Members, most of whom are Chiropractors.

The ASRF is an Australian company limited by guarantee, ABN 74 005 305 117, which was established to fund research, public education and professional education into the causes, prevention and care of spine-related diseases and disorders.

The Mission of the ASRF is to contribute to improvements in the health of Australians through research into spinal health care.

A key Objective of the ASRF is to foster a multi-disciplinary approach to spinal health care and emphasise a Chiropractic paradigm to health and wellness care at the patient level.

The Australian Spinal Research Foundation is a non-profit national Foundation incorporated as a company limited by guarantee under Australian Corporations Law.

Under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997, the ASRF is approved as both an Income Tax Exempt Charity (Section 50-5) and a Deductible Gift Recipient (Section 30-15 Research Institute) through its Research Fund.

The ASRF is registered as Charity No. 1193 under the Queensland Collections Act and is exempt from Stamp Duty under the Stamp Act.

The affairs of the ASRF are managed by an Honorary Board of Governors, elected by the Members and a small National Office in Queensland.

What Does The ASRF Do?

It raises funds for spinal research through a variety of activities.

It supports Chiropractic spinal research through Research Grants.

In March each year, the ASRF advertises for Research Grant Applications in line with specified priorities. Please visit the Research page of our website at www.spinalresearch.com.au for application forms and guidelines.

Examples of research funded by the ASRF in recent years include:

  • the effect of Chiropractic maintenance care on wellbeing;
  • an investigation of the Chiropractic vertebral subluxation hypothesis;
  • the effect of Chiropractic care on nerves and joints in the neck;
  • the relationship of head position and blood flow in arteries;
  • the effect of Chiropractic care on headaches (migraine), insomnia, back pain, pre-menstrual syndrome, asthma, stress levels, infantile colic and blood pressure; and
  • the effect of mattress firmness on muscle relaxation while sleeping.
